Building friendships and finding a spouse is one of the most rewarding long-term goals Stardew Valley. You can only have one man or woman at a time (no surprises there), but getting friendships with all residents has other benefits.
This friendship and marriage guide of Stardew Valley focuses on the bachelor and bachelorette residents, who are only available for marriage. Regardless of your gender, all bachelors and bachelorettes are viable candidates, but as soon as you marry, everyone else acts like ordinary people.
First, our friendship and marriage will cover basic principles, then we will dive into every character and build your relationship with them. Click on one of the links below to jump right into your favorite Stardew Valley village.
Friendship in Stardew Valley is represented by the heart meter. Normal residents have 10 maximum hearts, with your spouse up to 12. You can see the full list in the menu, as seen above.
How to increase friendship
How to lose friendship
Giving gifts is one of the best ways to improve your relationship with Stardew Valley residents. Just grab an item that they will love or love (see below for ideal gifts), and leave it on top. You can do it once a day and twice a week.
Item quality has a huge impact on how effective your gifts are.
There is one exception to this rule: birthdays. You can always give a gift to a village on their birthday, and you have to have a much bigger effect and give a special dialogue. The festival of the Winterster festival also gets a friendship bonus.
There are a few items that, although not the best, still offer a good bonus when given to anyone. This includes:
The above-mentioned heart events are special events that are unique to each village. They are unlocked on certain thresholds, which are usually two, four, six, eight and ten hearts. After the two heart event, you can enter the village's bedroom, making it much easier to talk to find them every day.
You will not be able to increase eight hearts with any marriage candidates without giving them a bouquet. You can buy the bouquet from Pierre's General Store for 200 gold. Then you unlock 10 hearts and get them in any normal way.
It is worth noting that you can date any or all of the residents at the same time. This has consequences, but they only last for a week and do not prevent marriage with any given candidate. Don't try it in real life.
When you reach and want to imagine 10 hearts, you have to give them the mermaid hanger. It can be purchased from the Old Mariner over the broken bridge on the beach for 5000 gold. You will marry three days after giving it to a village, and all the other judges will return to ordinary residents.
If for whatever reason you are not satisfied with your spouse's choice, Stardew Valley makes it easy to divide and choose another. Be careful though, because it will bring them back to heart and nasty conversations about how marriage did not work out.
Separating only varies with the book in the mayor's Manor. It will cost you 50 000 gold, but if you haven't canceled it by the end of the day, your spouse and all their belongings will be removed from your home the next day. However, you get kids to keep, because it's worth it.
Your ex will then be marked as such in the menu and will refuse any future gifts. However, if you unlock the Witch's Hut, you can delete all your ex-spades' memories for the low cost of 30,000 gold. It'll make you feel like you've never met them.
