There's a ton of it streaming services out there in 2019, more specifically added all the time. One of the oldest services remains the best – we talk about Hulu. With an extensive library of movies and shows, and now the Live TV addition, Hulu is still one of the top streaming platforms in the US. What is Hulu and what does all service plans offer? Let's jump in and look closer.
What is Hulu and how does it work?
So what is Hulu? Hulu is an on-demand video streaming platform that has been around for more than a decade. Founded in 2007, it is currently owned by Disney and Comcast, with the Walt Disney company holding a majority stake. Unfortunately for many, Hulu is only available in the US and Japan. Although it is planned to make the international streaming service all the way back to 2010, no Canadian, European or any other version has yet been realized, probably due to content licensing issues. However, the Hulu and Hulu (No Ads) plans are also available in Puerto Rico, as well as on US military bases.
Hulu can be a dream for any chord cutter that misses network TV programming.
Hulu subscription plans and price
Of course, no streaming service is so tempting without knowing how much it costs. The good news is that Hulu is one of the cheaper platforms. These are his three available plans currently available without additions:
- Hulu for $ 5.99 / month (includes ads)
- Hulu (No Ads) $ 11.99 / month
- Hulu + Live TV $ 44.99 / month
Hulu also had an ad-supported free version with a smaller library in the day, but that is no longer the case. However, if you can stomach the ads, the basic plan has one of the best prices for content relationships. There are totally free ad supported streaming platforms like Sony Crackle, of course, but their catalogs are significantly smaller.
The plans No ads, on the other hand, are fairly self explanatory. It offers the same content without the annoyance of advertising! However, there are a few exceptions. Three to be exact. Gray's Anatomy, Marvel's Agents or S.H.I.E.L.D and how to get away with murder, all have short ads before and after episodes. Although it may be against some users' understandable expectation that No Ads would actually mean zero advertising, others are unlikely to care.
What if you want to share your plans with no ads with a loved one? Just like NetflixThe default plan, Hulu (No Ads), allows you to open up to two streams at a time, but you can install the app on an unlimited number of devices. The standard one-time free trial is also offered for both Hulu and Hulu (No Ads). However, Hulu doesn't have a premium plan with more simultaneous streams or 4K streaming. Currently the only apps available On the platform in 4K seems to be several Yu-Gi-Oh! Japanese animated series.
What is Hulu TV?
You may have heard of Hulu TV, but what is it? Officially named Hulu + Live TV, this is the most unique service offered by the service. To put it simply, it's like a cable package along with the complete video-on-demand catalog. It allows you to stream more than 60 channels, including standard CNN, Fox and CBS. You also get channels like ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPN News. Other major additions to fans of non-fiction programming are Animal Planet, National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild and the Smithsonian Channel. You can see the full list here.
With such a variety you can enjoy live news, sports, kids programming and more with a single subscription.
But does it sound too good to be true? Compared to other Live TV streaming services such as Fubo or SlingTV, Hulu + Live TV is a bargain at $ 49.99 a month. It not only features Disney-owned channels, but also the massive catalog of on-demand shows and movies, as well as 50-hour cloud DVRs. Is there a catch? Types – 4K streaming is not available. Also, you shouldn't buy ads as a separate $ 10 / month addition on the Hulu + Live TV plan, if you want to enjoy content without interruption. As you may have suspected, live channel streams or DVR recordings do not apply. Channels broadcasting ads will only do so, even if you watch online through Hulu.
However, if you have the cash to spend, Hulu + Live TV offers a variety of add-ons that can attract your attention: premium networks like HBO and Cinemax, giving you an additional $ 14.99 and $ 9 , 99 will cost, an entertainment channel package that includes the cooking channel and so on.
You can even disable $ 5 each on Enhanced 200-Hour DVR Storage and Unlimited Screens. However, keep in mind that even with unlimited screens, certain restrictions apply. Content of premium channels such as HBO, Cinemax and SHOWTIME are only allowed on 5 screens at a time. There is plenty of room for personalization, but Hulu + Live TV is not without its faults. It offers a great variety, but it comes at a price, especially if you want all the extras.
Note: Hulu + Live TV only offers a one-week free trial as opposed to the other subscription plans.
What can you look at Hulu? A closer look at on-demand content
At its core, Hulu is still an on-demand video and television service, and what makes or breaks a platform is its library. Hulu has impressive numbers, but does it offer both quality and quantity? On the television program before, we can see for it. For example, if you're a fan of animated series, you'll love it. You can attend classrooms like Daria, The Simpsons, Futurama and South Park, as well as new hits such as Adventure Time, Rick and Morty and Gravity Falls. The choice of Japanese anime is also featured with famous titles such as Sailor Moon, Attack on Titan, One-Punch Man, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Code Geass and more.
Lastly, let's look at that movie catalog. We must admit that Hulu is a bit short compared to the competition. Sure, you can find classics like Pulp Fiction, The Shining and Robocop, but there are also far fewer than big titles. In particular, very mediocre comedies, soap operas and Christmas movies. However, many recent films, such as Spiderman: Homecoming, are heavily advertised on the movie, but are only available through the STARZ add-on ($ 8.99 per month).
You can still find compelling titles like Annihilation, The Dark Knight, the real one in and more, but the movie selection is a bit soft. This is the Achilles heel of Hulu, but if you don't mind spending extra money, fill in the gaps with additions like HBO, STARZ and Cinemax.
