axis Airbnb Revolution by giving us the opportunity to rent our homes, apartments or parts, Turo is the Airbnb car. Here's what you need to know about it!
What is Turo?
Turo is a peer car company. Formerly known as RelayRides, Turo owners can make extra money by renting their vehicles while offering a convenient and fast way to rent a car for those who need transportation.
Unlike Uber or Lyft, Turo is not a rickety app, but a service that meets traditional car rental. This makes it ideal for longer journeys you have previously planned – such as the next job interview outside the town, or to explore a new city of your own. Turo can also be cheaper than traditional car rental and have hosts who don't mind renting drivers under 25.
Best of all, Turo offers something for every taste and budget: whether you want a luxury car to enjoy your style holiday or a cheap but reliable vehicle, Turo has covered you. The service is available in the US, Canada, UK and Germany. So how do you start?
Sign up for Turo
Initial registration is very easy – after downloading Turo from the Play Store or App Store You can sign in to your Google or Facebook account or just your email address. You will not be asked to complete any personal details except your name until you decide to book or list a car. Once you sign in, just enter a location, airport or address, as well as your travel dates to browse the available rental cars near you.
Find the right car
Do you want to do an environmentally friendly ride to your destination? When booking a Tesla or any other electric car, Turo is a good option. In fact, you can choose from over 800 unique manufacturers and models. The multiple filters allow you to find just the right vehicle for you – whether it's a car, motorcycle, or minibus, or a truck. Not a fan of the manual? Then you can only select cars with automatic transmission. You can also sort by price, number of seats and even color.
One thing you should definitely pay attention to, however, is total mileage or distance. Hospitals set limits on how many kilometers or km per day you can drive with their car. So, if you want to go on a road trip, you'll need to calculate the distance you're traveling. Each additional mile will incur a charge unless you request an extension to the app itself. This makes communication with hosts essential to a good experience. We therefore recommend that you recommend filter listings to only overall hosts when using the program for the first time.
Turo also has three additional classes: Business, Deluxe and Super Deluxe Class. As the name suggests, the use of this filter will display the best business travel cars. Deluxe and Super Deluxe class, on the other hand, offer exclusive cars for guests between 25 and 30 years respectively. You can still rent a Deluxe car, even if you are under 25, but it will be at the cost of a $ 1500 refundable deposit.
If you found a Turo car to your liking, an important step before discussion was reviewing host reviews and ratings. As with Airbnb, it is your best indication that the person you rent is reliable. However, your mileage can vary (pun intended), so be thorough.
At the bottom of each listing you will also find guidelines written by the host. Read it carefully before continuing the discussion. Some owners do not allow pets in their vehicle, so if you plan to take your dog to the vet, you may need to look for another car. No smoking policy is also very common. However, the most important thing to pay attention to is whether the host wants to refill the car and how to return / drop the vehicle. Many will also require you to take photos or videos from inside and outside the car before driving. We recommend that you do so anyway, so you will not be held liable for any prior damage to the car.
How to discuss and add work
Once you've found the right car on Turo, it's time to discuss. But how does the rent work from a stranger's car through a program really? It may seem complicated at first, but it's not so much trouble. It's in many ways similar to Airbnb.
There are two types of discussions. Book immediately, which does not require ownership approval and regular booking. This requires the owner to confirm or refuse your trip within eight hours. If you're new to Turo, we suggest you choose a regular booking. Most hosts, especially all-stars, will answer fairly quickly, so if you're not in a hurry, it's the better option.
At check-out you must select a bakkie and return the place or the car delivered to you (this usually costs you extra). Host will add one or several places that will be free, or add an additional cost, depending on the distance. For example, a host is likely to be a place in their neighborhood as a free list, while downloading or unloading to the city's airport will cost you extra.
Once you've picked up the pickup or delivery point, there are five steps you need to complete your Turbo reservation:
- Add additions
Depending on the host, there may be several extras you can buy for an extra cost. Prepaid fuel, for example, is very common. It allows you to return the car to any fuel level. Some hosts also provide child safety chairs, additional cleaning and so on.
- Fill in your information
As expected, you will need to complete your personal information before renting. This includes date of birth, license number, date of license issue, etc. You can also scan your license directly through the program.
- Choose your Turo Shield Protection
Insurance is something that is inevitable when it comes to car rentals. Turo allows you to choose from Premium, Basic, or Minimum Cover – each has different physical protection protection. You can read more about how it functions in your country here.
- Enter your payment information
Finally, add your payment information. Turo accepts most major credit cards, including American Express and Discover cards, as well as Visa and Mastercard debit cards linked to a check account. In the US and Canada, you can also pay with Google Pay, while Apple Pay is currently available in the United States.
- Message the host
Just like Airbnb, you need to write a short message to the car owner, to introduce yourself and provide basic information about your trip. It's an important step, so don't be too vague.
Once your booking has been approved, if you haven't sent, it's time to pick up your car. How this is done differs from host to host. Some will meet you and hand over the keys personally at a agreed time and place. Take this time to ask their questions, especially if you think there are things not mentioned in the guidelines. For example, eating or drinking in the car is allowed. Be sure to ask where the car documents are located so that you can get it when you are stopped by the police, and so on.
However, meeting the host personally is not always the case. Some acted with ingenious methods to transfer the keys to tenants. One host on YouTube showed how he confirmed the keys in lock boxes to a fence near the car and then texts rented the combination for them after sending him a photo of their driver's license and themselves near the car has. It is also possible with new engine models that can be remotely locked / unlocked. Whatever the case, make sure you host your car and return the vehicle.
Bonus Insurance Plot
Call your personal insurance company before renting through Turo. Some offer full coverage under your normal policy, as they do for regular rental cars. You can also see if the same is offered by your credit card company. Although Turo itself determines, users are unlikely to claim the discovery of car coverage, including Turo, online.
Even if everything went smoothly with your discussion, unforeseen circumstances can sometimes prevent us from traveling. What can you do in this case? If you need to cancel your Turo car rental, you can do so through the app or company website. You are also advised to let the host / owner know as soon as possible and let them know. According to Turo, "Guests can cancel for free up to 24 hours before their journey is scheduled to begin. The total amount refunded will depend on when the guest cancels the trip and the length of the trip."
The cancellation fee for trips longer than two days is one day's travel costs, while trips less than two days will cost you 50% of one-day travel costs. The travel price and travel expenses are included in the total cost.
What if a host cancels you? In that case, you will receive a full refund. Host will then be charged and an automatic review indicating the cancellation will be generated on their listing. To avoid the last secondary cancellations of unreliable owners, always check their reviews, but also have a plan B. You can also read more about Turo's cancellation policy here.
Turo vs. traditional rent
If you're not sure if Turo is worth it, let's weigh its positive and negative fiber than traditional car rental.
One of the biggest benefits Turo offers offers entrepreneurs rent under 21. Although traditional car rental services in the US usually do so, it comes at the expense of paying large insurance fees. Turo can also be overall cheaper if you are not too picky about the car model and the year. It is ideal for short trips on a budget. This can of course change, depending on the area in which you live. Therefore, always be sure to compare prices before handing out your hard-earned money. Rental car delivery is also a point in Turos' favor. With most traditional car rental services, you need to pick up your rental vehicle yourself.
The return of the car is where Turo may be disadvantageous. If you're traveling on a long journey, say after a new city, it's not likely that a private owner will agree to their car hundreds of miles away from where they live without 39, to charge a large fee. Traditional rental services, on the other hand, may have a different location at your destination town / city, which makes it easy to unload the car as soon as you finish using it.
Yet Turo is quick and easy to use. The peer motor vehicle company earned its "Airbnb cars" moniker, and you haven't checked it yet, there's no better time than now!
